If your home still runs on a 60-amp or 100-amp service, chances are it's the tightest bottleneck in the house — and the one thing standing between you and an EV charger, a heat pump, or a finished basement.
Walk through Guelph's older neighbourhoods — The Ward, Exhibition Park, St. Patrick's Ward, the century homes near downtown — and you'll find plenty of houses still fed by 60-amp services, some with the original fuse panels. Those services were perfectly adequate in 1955, when a home's biggest electrical loads were a fridge, a range, and a few lights. They are not adequate now. A single Level 2 EV charger can draw more current on its own than an entire 60-amp service was designed to deliver.
The post-war and 1970s subdivisions — Kortright Hills, the streets off Stone Road and Edinburgh Road — mostly got 100-amp panels. That's still the minimum standard for a new home today, but "minimum" is the operative word. Add a heat pump to replace an aging gas furnace, an EV charger in the garage, a hot tub on the deck, and a finished basement with its own baseboard heat or kitchenette, and a 100-amp service runs out of headroom fast. A proper load calculation under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code often confirms what homeowners already suspect: the panel is full, and the service can't legally carry another major load.
There's also the insurance angle, and it's become the most common reason Guelph homeowners call us. Many Ontario insurers now decline to write or renew policies on homes with 60-amp service, and most treat fuse panels as a red flag — fuses can be over-fused (a 30-amp fuse screwed into a 15-amp circuit) in a way breakers can't. A service upgrade is more than swapping a grey box on the basement wall. Done properly, it touches everything from the overhead or underground service conductors to the grounding system.
First, the paperwork and coordination. In Ontario, all of this work must be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and a notification must be filed with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) before the work begins. We file the ESA notification, arrange the inspection, and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Alectra Utilities, which serves Guelph. On upgrade day, the utility disconnects power in the morning, we complete the changeover, and power is typically restored the same day.
The physical work usually includes: a new 200-amp breaker panel with a full-size main breaker, a new meter base and service mast or lateral connections where required, upgraded service entrance conductors sized for 200 amps, a modern grounding and bonding system (ground rods or plate, bonded water and gas lines), and clean re-termination of every existing branch circuit into the new panel. Every circuit gets labelled — a small thing that pays off for the life of the house. The ESA inspector then reviews the installation and issues a Certificate of Inspection, which is the document your insurer, your lawyer on a future sale, and any rebate program will want to see.
A note on aluminum wiring. If your Guelph home was built between roughly 1965 and 1978, there's a fair chance some or all of its branch circuits are wired in aluminum. This is not, by itself, a reason to panic or rewire the house. Aluminum wiring is safe when its connections are properly made with rated devices and connectors. During a panel upgrade we assess the aluminum circuits, terminate them at the new panel with approved connectors and anti-oxidant compound, and give you an honest report on any device connections elsewhere in the home that would benefit from remediation.
